Returning to Work as a Breastfeeding Mum – Hollie’s Story

As part of Black Breastfeeding Week, we’re proud to share real stories from inspiring parents in our community. These stories highlight the unique challenges and triumphs of breastfeeding, reminding us that every journey looks different – and every step deserves to be celebrated. Here, Holly from London shares how she continued her breastfeeding journey upon returning to work after maternity leave.

Hollie, aka The Wanderlust London Mum, shares her experience of returning to work whilst breastfeeding:

When I had my first baby, I struggled with breastfeeding. My supply was low, and relying on a manual pump that didn’t work well left me discouraged. Weaning came sooner than I wanted, and I carried that disappointment with me.

By the time I had my second baby, I knew I wanted things to be different. I was determined to keep breastfeeding when I returned to work, even if it meant learning new ways to manage.

That’s when having the right pump made such a difference. At first, I used a standard electric pump, which was a step up from my first experience. But this year when I returned to work after having my youngest child, the Ardo Alyssa Hands-Free Pump has been a complete game-changer. I can express from both breasts at the same time, and because it’s wearable, I can use my hands – whether I’m catching up on emails, having lunch, or just taking a breather during the day. The cool-bag storage means I don’t need to worry about where to put my milk at work.

Going back to work while breastfeeding hasn’t always been easy, but it has been possible. I learned that I had the right to ask my employer for the time and space to express – and that made me feel more confident about continuing my journey.

My Tips for Other Mamas Returning to Work:

  • Talk to your employer ahead of time about your need to express.
  • Know your rights – you deserve breaks and a private space.
  • Having the right pump makes all the difference.
  • Don’t be afraid to advocate for yourself and your baby.

Breastfeeding while working has been one of my biggest challenges, but also one of my proudest achievements. It hasn’t always been straightforward, but with support and the right tools, I’ve been able to continue giving my baby what they need – while also returning to a career I love.
