To mark World Breastfeeding Week, we’re championing mums by sharing their honest, empowering breastfeeding stories. Each journey is different – from navigating NICU and returning to work, to starting again after a tough first experience. These stories reflect the strength, resilience, and dedication behind every feed. By sharing them, we hope to support and encourage other parents on their own unique path.
Returning to work and continuing to breastfeed – Grace’s story
When Grace returned to her job in the operating theatre just before her youngest turned one, she was determined to continue breastfeeding – just like she had with her first baby.
“Many mums think that returning to work means the end of their breastfeeding journey however this isn’t the case! You’ve worked so hard to reach this point, why stop now?”
Finding a new routine
Grace’s shifts are mixed, and with two children to juggle, no two weeks are the same. Her second baby, Walter, didn’t take a bottle, but he adapted well and stayed happy at nursery.
“One of my concerns with Walter is that he never really accepted a bottle – which is a common concern for a lot of mums who exclusively breastfeed. Thankfully he is a good eater and does well drinking water when away from me.”
Pumping made easy with a wearable pump
Grace uses the Ardo Melia Wearable Double Electric Breast Pump, which allows her to pump hands-free during busy shifts. She appreciates the Melia’s soft silicone, long battery life, and adjustable suction levels – which she tailored to reduce pumping time as her body adjusted.
“In those first few months of being back to work I aimed to pump milk every three hours, or when I started to feel uncomfortable. This helped maintain my milk supply and prevented me from becoming engorged and at risk of mastitis.”
Support and self-care makes all the difference
Grace is grateful for a supportive workplace and also recognises the importance of self-care when making the transition back to work as a breastfeeding mum.
“Something I need to remind myself of is self care. Even though using a wearable breast pump makes expressing so convenient, it still takes time and energy to do. Now I make sure to sit down and enjoy a brew and biscuit while pumping.”
