Supporting families through every breastfeeding journey has always been at the heart of what we do at Ardo Medical. While breastfeeding comes naturally for some, many parents experience challenges along the way. Having the right support, information, and tools can make all the difference.
That’s why we’re delighted to be collaborating with Louise, a Registered Midwife, Registered Nurse and Breastfeeding Specialist, from the Breastfeeding Educator Hub.
Louise has created two in-depth educational videos focusing on the Ardo Supplemental Nursing System (SNS) – one designed for healthcare professionals and one created specifically for parents. These videos provide clear, evidence-informed guidance to help more people understand how the SNS can support breastfeeding when additional help is needed.
What is a Supplemental Nursing System (SNS)?
A SNS (Supplemental Nursing System) is a feeding aid designed to provide supplementary milk to a baby while they breastfeed at the breast.
The system consists of a small container that holds expressed breast milk or prescribed supplementary milk, connected to a fine feeding tube positioned alongside the nipple. As the baby feeds, they receive additional milk while continuing to stimulate the breast.
This means babies can continue practising breastfeeding while receiving the nourishment they need, helping to support both feeding and the breastfeeding relationship.
When might a Supplemental Nursing System (SNS) be used?
Every breastfeeding journey is unique, and an SNS may be recommended by a healthcare professional in a variety of situations, including:
- Babies who need additional milk while learning to breastfeed
- Supporting babies who have difficulty transferring enough milk
- Helping establish or rebuild breastfeeding after a period of separation
- Encouraging babies back to the breast following bottle feeding
- Supporting induced lactation or relactation
- Helping maintain breastfeeding while stimulating milk production
As with any feeding support, it’s always recommended that parents seek guidance from their midwife, health visitor, infant feeding specialist or lactation consultant to determine whether an SNS is appropriate for their individual circumstances.
Benefits of using a Supplemental Nursing System (SNS)
When used appropriately and with professional support, an SNS can offer a number of benefits.
Supports breastfeeding at the breast
Rather than supplementing away from the breast, the SNS allows babies to continue feeding at the breast, helping them practise effective attachment and feeding skills.
Encourages natural breast stimulation
As babies continue suckling, the breast receives ongoing stimulation, which can help support and encourage milk production.
Helps protect the breastfeeding relationship
For many families, being able to continue feeding at the breast can be emotionally important while supplementary feeding is required.
Flexible feeding support
The SNS can be used with expressed breast milk or other supplementary milk as advised by healthcare professionals, providing flexibility while families work towards their breastfeeding goals.
Learn from an experienced breastfeeding specialist
To help parents and healthcare professionals feel confident using the Ardo SNS, Louise has produced two dedicated educational videos.

Through the Breastfeeding Educator Hub, she supports healthcare professionals with continuing education while also helping parents navigate their own breastfeeding journeys with confidence.
